Export your data
Owners and admins can download the workspace’s messages and files as a zip, in the same format Slack uses for its exports. Keep it as a backup, search it with your own tools, or bring it into another chat app. Open Workspace settings → Security & compliance → Export data.
Start an export
Section titled “Start an export”- Under What to export, pick Public channels or All channels and direct messages.
- Under Messages from, pick The beginning, The last 12 months or The last 90 days.
- Leave Include files on to add the photos, documents and call recordings shared in those channels. Files over 1 GB are listed in the messages but left out of the zip.
- Click Start export.
You can close Workspace settings: the export is made in the background, and the Exports list shows how far it got. We email you when it’s ready.
One export runs at a time, and a workspace can start one a day.
Who can export what
Section titled “Who can export what”| Export | Who can start it | Plans |
|---|---|---|
| Public channels | Owners and admins | All plans |
| All channels and direct messages | Owners | Corporate, Enterprise |
An export of all channels and direct messages includes private channels and everyone’s DMs and group DMs. When someone starts one, every owner of the workspace gets an email saying who did it.
Download it
Section titled “Download it”Click Download next to the export. Freesbe asks you to confirm it’s you (a passkey, an authenticator app code or a code by email) unless you did in the last 15 minutes, then the download starts.
- Only the person who started the export can download it. Other admins can’t.
- The email we send has no download link, only a link into Freesbe.
- Each download link works for 15 minutes.
- Starting and downloading an export are both recorded in the Audit log.
- The export is deleted 7 days after it’s ready.
A big workspace’s export comes in parts of up to 2 GB each, with a Part 1, Part 2… button for each.
